Photography and Painting and Building, Oh My!

In On My Mind

I don’t know of any “creative types” out there that limit their creativity to one media or craft.

That’s why this blog used to be 1/2 Past Eight Woodworks before it was 1/2 Past Eight Photography before it was 1/2 Past Eight Pottery before it was 1/2 Past Eight Etc.

And speaking personally, I would go crazy if I didn’t have the opportunity to dabble in many, many, many (too many?) projects and means of expressing my artistry and desire to create.  But then, that may be a symptom less of creativity and more of ADD. Which may be why I don’t think I could be called a master of any of them, but that’s another article for another – ooh, look, a squirrel!

If I had no day-job – thank the Lord that’s not an issue – I could still easily fill my time with a number of creative outlets:

  • Designing & building wood projects
I’m probably most-known in my little circle for this one. I love taking something from pencil scratched ideas to a full-blown 3D mock-up on my computer to the finished piece – furniture, toys, gadgets, etc. And I love even more, when people come to me for advice, requests and commissions!
  • Learning new photography techniques
This one may be more like my golf game. I may be really bad, but I sure do love it! I certainly didn’t buy a new studio lighting kit in addition to my table-top lightbox, build a backdrop frame and have plans on converting the guest room into our own little photo studio – oh wait, yes I did.  But really, I don’t plan on making photography a part time job or anything – but I do want to get to the level at which people would ask me to.
  • Painting
I have no desire or skill to create life-like paintings. It amazes me every time I watch a video of an artist who starts with a blank canvas and ends with a painting of a person so life-like, you would think it was a photograph. But abstract and general expression? That sounds like fun! Fashenhues stains & ceramics, oil &/or acrylic & canvas, latex & walls – well, not so much on that last one.

What are the means and methods you use to express yourself?
